If you’re getting ready to move into a new home, you probably have a lot on your mind. It can be overwhelming to think about everything you need to do, especially when you have other important things on your plate. However, it doesn’t have to be such a hassle. With proper planning, you’ll have a smooth day and be able to enjoy your new home in no time. Read more for a list of ways to make your move-in process easy and stress-free.
Tips to Improve Your Move-In Process
- Have A Yard Sale
The more stuff you have, the more work you’ll have to do come move-in day. Look around and think about some items or furniture you don’t need. Post an online advertisement and host a yard sale; If you need to buy moving supplies, you will most likely benefit from having extra cash. You could also donate items to a local charity or ask friends and family if they would like to have some of your possessions. The less clutter you have, the easier it will be to move.
- Pack a Separate Box of Essentials
First, pack a box of essentials labeled “Open First” so you’ll have everything you need to get through the first night in your new place. A change of clothes, chargers, a few kitchen utensils and toiletries should be at the top of your list. From that point, you can take your time unpacking instead of spending an hour trying to find your toothpaste when you need it.
- Transition Your Services Early
Don’t forget the services you’ll need soon after you move in (electricity, internet and cable being a few). You don’t want to be without power on move-in day! Call these companies well in advance of your move to let them know you’re switching over to a new location. Doing this a week or two before your move will ensure you have everything you need from day one.
- Don’t Go at It Alone
It can be easy to say you don’t need help, but once as move-in day comes you’ll be grateful for any extra hands. Even if you have movers, it wouldn’t hurt to have some friends pitch in to help with the unpacking. Don’t be afraid to ask for support; let them know when it comes time for them to move, you would be happy to return the favor!
- Leave Yourself Plenty of Time
The hardest part of moving isn’t often the moving itself, but setting up your new home afterwards. Don’t just throw everything in random boxes and expect the rest to work itself out. You don’t want to be unpacking for months after move-in day. Think about what needs doing: you’ll have to arrange and assemble furniture, get electronics hooked up, set up your kitchen, and get your clothes organized in the closet. Consider taking some time off work (at least a few days, preferably a week) to get situated. Any extra stress during this time should be avoided if possible.
